Mohali: A major sewerage infrastructure project has commenced in Mohali with the aim of improving the underground drainage system and addressing recurring sewerage blockages reported in parts of the city. The project will cover areas around Phase 7, Phase 3B2 and adjoining localities, where residents have faced repeated disruptions due to pressure on the existing sewerage network.

The project involves the installation of a 700-mm RCC pipeline with HDP inner lining between Chawla Chowk and Mataur Chowk. The work has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹1.45 crore and is targeted for completion within approximately six months.
Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh inaugurated the project on Friday and said the upgraded sewerage line is expected to provide a more dependable and long-term solution to recurring problems in the area. He emphasised that strengthening basic civic infrastructure is essential as residential areas continue to experience growth and increasing demand for municipal services.
The existing sewerage system in several parts of the locality has experienced repeated blockages, causing inconvenience to residents and putting additional pressure on municipal maintenance teams. The new high-capacity pipeline is expected to improve sewage flow and increase the overall carrying capacity of the network along the affected route.
700-mm Pipeline to Improve Sewerage Capacity
The proposed pipeline has been designed to provide greater capacity compared with the existing arrangement. The use of an HDP inner lining is intended to enhance the durability and performance of the RCC pipeline, particularly in an underground environment where long-term reliability is important.
According to the project plan, the sewerage infrastructure work will extend from Chawla Chowk to Mataur Chowk and will include associated components required for proper functioning of the network. These works are expected to include manholes, road gullies and other supporting infrastructure necessary for maintaining efficient drainage and access for future maintenance.
Speaking at the inauguration, MLA Kulwant Singh said the project had been planned keeping in view the present as well as future requirements of the locality. He said a properly designed and maintained sewerage line could provide reliable service for many years and help reduce the need for repeated temporary repairs.
Residents Expect Relief from Recurring Sewerage Blockages
For residents of Phase 7, Phase 3B2 and surrounding areas, the primary expectation is that the new infrastructure will provide a lasting solution rather than short-term relief. Repeated sewerage blockages can affect daily life, create sanitation concerns and require frequent intervention by civic authorities.
The additional capacity provided by the new pipeline is expected to improve the movement of sewage through the network and reduce pressure on existing infrastructure. However, timely completion, proper installation and regular maintenance will remain important to ensure that the project delivers the expected benefits over the long term.
Mohali’s Growing Urban Infrastructure Needs
The project comes as Mohali continues to expand, with increasing residential development placing greater demand on essential civic infrastructure. Sewerage systems, water supply networks, roads and storm-water drainage are all critical components of a growing urban centre.
Older residential areas can face particular challenges when infrastructure designed for earlier population levels comes under increasing pressure. Upgrading underground sewerage networks therefore remains important for maintaining reliable civic services and supporting future development.
The new pipeline is expected to strengthen the sewerage system along the Chawla Chowk-Mataur Chowk corridor and provide additional capacity for surrounding residential areas. The improvement could also help civic authorities manage future requirements more effectively as the locality continues to develop.
Mayor and Civic Representatives Attend Inauguration
The inauguration was attended by several local civic representatives and municipal officials. Those present included Mayor Sarabjit Singh Samana, Senior Deputy Mayor RP Sharma, Deputy Mayor Harpal Singh Channa and councillor Paramjit Singh Kahlo, along with other representatives and officials associated with the civic administration.
The presence of local representatives highlighted the importance of strengthening basic municipal infrastructure in residential neighbourhoods. Coordination between elected representatives, municipal officials and residents will be important during the construction phase to minimise inconvenience and ensure that the project progresses according to schedule.
Six-Month Completion Target
With construction now underway, the project has been assigned a target of approximately six months for completion. Residents will be closely watching the progress of the work, particularly in areas where construction activity may temporarily affect traffic movement or access to nearby properties.
Once completed, the new sewerage connection is expected to improve system capacity between Chawla Chowk and Mataur Chowk and provide greater reliability to nearby residential areas. The long-term success of the project, however, will depend not only on timely construction but also on proper maintenance of the upgraded infrastructure.
The ₹1.45-crore project represents an important step towards strengthening Mohali’s underground civic infrastructure.
